Read MoreStorm Bert Fails to Derail South Berks Hockey Club Despite the relentless wind and rain brought by Storm Bert, South Berks Hockey Club teams braved the challenging conditions over the weekend, delivering a mix of dramatic victories, tough losses, and gritty draws across the board. The Ladies’ 1st team claimed the standout result of the weekend, securing a commanding 5-1 victory over Banbury in the Premier Division. A clinical performance saw two goals apiece from in-form striker Alice Russell and returning veteran Kelly Hancock, while Luci Griffiths-Jones added a decisive fifth to seal the win. This dominant display has propelled the team into third place in the league standings. The Ladies’ 2nd team, however, faced further frustration, narrowly losing 1-0 to Staines. This result leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table as their search for form continues. Meanwhile, the Ladies’ 3rd team earned a well-deserved 1-1 draw against Maidenhead, with Eliza Mawdsley finding the back of the net to secure a hard-fought point. The Ladies’ 4th team battled to a 0-0 stalemate against Marlow, holding steady at eighth in the league, while the Ladies’ 5th team matched Phoenix Reading in a spirited 1-1 draw, highlighted by Helen Wilson’s first-ever goal for the club. They, too, sit in eighth position in their division. On the men’s side, the 1st team suffered a tough 4-1 defeat in a top-of-the-league clash against Trojans in Eastleigh. Despite an early strike from Chris Badger and a strong opening half-hour, Trojans seized control with goals on either side of halftime and added a fourth late on. This result drops Berks to seventh in an incredibly tight league, where only six points separate the top seven teams. The Men’s 2nd team delivered a spirited performance at Cantley Park, securing a 2-2 draw against high-flying Sonning thanks to a brace from Neil Bennett. They maintain eighth place in their division. The Men’s 3rd team enjoyed a strong 4-2 away victory at Staines, with Aaron Smith scoring twice and Richie Wallace and Des Sanders each contributing a goal, lifting the team into fourth position. The Men’s 4th team continued their remarkable season with a 5-3 win over Oxford University, marking their seventh victory in eight games. Goals from Duncan Clake (2), Justin Patterson, Mark Andrews, and Mike Jarvis kept them firmly at the top of their division, now four points clear of Amersham. However, the Men’s 5th team suffered a 5-1 defeat at home to Stoke Green, with Ethan Tran scoring the consolation goal, leaving them seventh in their league. Similarly, the Men’s 6th team fell 3-1 to Newbury, with Mark Peeley’s lone goal leaving them in 10th place. Sunday brought a glimmer of success for the U14 girls, who secured an impressive 4-1 away win against Windsor. However, the Ladies’ O45 Masters team endured a narrow 1-0 loss at home to Wycombe. Next weekend promises another packed schedule. Home matches at Cantley Park kick off at 10:30 a.m. with the Men’s 4th team taking on Thame, followed by the Ladies’ 3rd team facing Sonning at noon. The headline clash of the day features the Men’s 1st team battling Amersham at 1:30 p.m., with the Men’s 3rd team meeting Oxford at 3:00 p.m. and the Men’s 6th team closing the day against Reading. Away fixtures include the Ladies’ 1st team visiting Chichester, the Ladies’ 2nd team traveling to Wycombe, the Ladies’ 4th team heading to Windsor, and the Ladies’ 5th team competing in High Wycombe. The Men’s 2nd team face Oxford University, while the Men’s 5th team journey to Slough Swifts. South Berks Vets will host Haslemere at Birch Hill at 11:30 a.m. Sunday’s youth action sees the U14 girls hosting Yateley at 9:30 a.m. at Wellington College, while the U14 boys travel to Maidenhead.
