Remembering a true Suma

Clive Raymond McNelly, Landlord of ‘The White Horse’ in Wokingham, sadly passed away on December 4th, 2024, at the age of 60.Clive had been courageously battling cancer for over a year. A proud family man, Clive, alongside his wife Anita, instilled strong family values in their three sons: Stephen, Thomas, and Ashley.Originally a builder by trade, Clive’s career diversified over the years. For the past eight years, he worked tirelessly to transform the White Horse into a thriving business, with the invaluable support of Anita and Thomas.During his tenure, Clive completely revitalized the pub’s garden and restaurant areas, creating a welcoming and vibrant space for customers to enjoy both day and night. The White Horse’s Festival Garden became a hub for live music events, hosting numerous performances over the years, with even more planned for 2025—a testament to Clive’s passion for live music and bringing people together.Clive’s dedication to fostering community extended well beyond the White Horse. Before becoming a landlord, he served as Chairman of the Emmbrook Sports & Social Club, where he also managed the grounds and facilities. Devoting countless hours of personal time, he ensured the club ran smoothly, building a successful and inclusive environment that attracted participants from youth and senior football and cricket teams alike.In the late 1990s, Clive became actively involved with Wokingham Town FC. Starting as a youth team manager for boys and girls at the U7 level, he later progressed to managing the reserve team and eventually the first team. During his tenure, Clive led the club to multiple trophies and earned numerous accolades, including several ‘Clubman of the Year’ awards.Clive will be remembered as a man of immense determination, focus, and generosity—a man who worked tirelessly to create meaningful and joyful experiences for others. Through his dedication, he unwittingly built countless communities of like-minded people who came together to connect and enjoy life, whether through sports, music, or his hospitality business.Clive leaves behind a profound legacy, one that will be carried forward by Anita, Thomas, and Ashley, as they continue to build upon the vision Clive established at the White Horse eight years ago.He will be sorely missed by the thousands of lives he touched.
