Report by Desiree SchalkwykSimon Rodwell and Gurbhaj Kahlon have solidified their dominance in the Berkshire Squash Doubles Championships, claiming the title for an impressive third consecutive year. Their combination of brute power and precision shot-making proved unbeatable yet again, as they set a high benchmark for doubles squash.
The event, held at the Wellington Health & Fitness Club, featured four pairs competing in a round-robin format. Despite the small draw, the matches were fiercely contested under the best-of-three PAR 15 format, with sudden death at 14-all ensuring every point mattered. In one of the tournament’s standout encounters, Steve “Doddi” Dodridge and Jack Waldron edged past Dave Weston and Graham Hooper in a three-game thriller (7/15, 15/13, 15/3). However, Doddi’s tournament was derailed when he suffered a back injury during their subsequent match against Rodwell and Kahlon. The final round-robin standings were as follows:
The final brought a familiar rivalry to center stage as Rodwell & Kahlon faced Paul Johnson & Jamie Waters in a rematch of last year’s decisive clash. The champions came out strong, taking the first two games convincingly, 11/6, 11/6.The third game saw Johnson and Waters mount a spirited challenge, pushing the match to a tense climax. But Rodwell and Kahlon’s experience and composure under pressure carried them through to a 12/10 victory, clinching the championship in straight games.
A heartfelt thank you to the Wellington Health & Fitness Club for hosting the tournament and to Lee Hall, Jeremy Baker, and Jack Waldron for officiating the matches.Rodwell and Kahlon will return next year as the team to beat, aiming to extend their remarkable streak in the Berkshire Squash Doubles Championships.Categories: 2024, Adults, Competitions, Events, Latest News, Squash News
